Thanks for keeping us safe!

Over the last two months, everything changed quickly. Undeniably, the COVID-19 crisis has had an impact on every part of your life – both personally and professionally.

As the pandemic situation and regulations change, we are working hard to keep the health and safety of our staff and clients at the forefront. The Achievement Center of LECOM Health is so thankful for the individuals and groups who helped provide masks for our team and the families who entrust us with their care. So many have come together during this challenging time to help one another – the resilience, kindness and generosity of our community is remarkable.

We’d like to acknowledge and extend our gratitude to Mask-Erie, Super Stitch, Achievement Center of LECOM Health Blended Case Manager Colleen Prittie and super-kid, Gabby Troyer for donating your time and talents to helping keep us safe!

While we are all navigating this uncharted territory, our community is lucky to have such wonderful people step up to help. We thank you!

Physical Therapy Top Ten List

  1. EARLY INTERVENTION has adopted the COACHING MODEL over the last several years so tele-intervention has come quite naturally. Here is how it works –  I DO, WE DO, YOU DO!
  2. PHYSICAL THERAPISTS are highly skilled VISUAL observers of posture, alignment, muscle activity, tone, and movement so with “only” our eyes on a child, we can be very effective at guiding successful interventions.
  3. There is an ideal window in the first year of life for treatment of the common diagnoses of Torticollis (tight neck) and Plagiocephaly (misshapen head). The sooner these are addressed with PHYSICAL THERAPY, the better the outcomes, including resolution of the diagnoses and improvement of motor skill development.
  4. The gross motor / big body skill building of a baby in the first year is rapid and is the primary way we are able to observe development happening. Gross motor development / big body skill is KEY in all other areas of development. PHYSICAL THERAPY COACHING MODEL will help you learn how to teach your baby to roll, sit up, crawl and walk!
  5. Helping your own child move with PHYSICAL THERAPY COACHING yields a great amount of parent confidence, joy, and satisfaction. YOU bring the MAGIC!
  6. PHYSICAL THERAPY and MOVEMENT equals whole body wellness – a “get up and go” attitude, strength, flexibility, endurance, and happy energy from moving your body!
  7. PHYSICAL THERAPISTS have a high degree of MEDICAL training as ALLIED HEALTH PROFESSIONALS. We can help answer questions or help you make decisions about other referrals (Orthopaedics, Orthotics, Neurology, Genetics, Cardio/Pulmonology, Ophthalmology, Ear / Nose / Throat, Psychology)
  8. Our ACHIEVEMENT CENTER – PHYSICAL THERAPY – EARLY INTERVENTION Team has 4 DPTs (Doctor of Physical Therapy) and over 50 years combined experience.
  9. Our ACHIEVEMENT CENTER – PHYSICAL THERAPY – EARLY INTERVENTION Team has additional certifications or special interests in: NDT – Pediatric Certified (NeuroDevelopmental Treatment), CEIM (Certified Educator of Infant Massage), Doula Trained, Pregnancy and Postpartum PT Intervention Trained, Kidding Around Yoga Certified, Rock Tape (kinesiology taping) and Infant Mental Health.
  10. PHYSICAL THERAPY with babies and young children will include Play and Triumph leading to Positive Transformation!

Alphabet Yoga:

1…2…3….Get up and MOVE!

Movement and Physical Activity has many benefits:

  1. Encourages creativity
  2. Improves sleep
  3. Address coordination and movement control
  4. Promotes cognitive development
  5. Combats anxiety and depression

Life can be stressful and overwhelming for all of us at times – and children are not immune to this.

While movement is always beneficial in many ways, it is especially beneficial and important as we navigate this novel time in our world. Children’s schedules and routines have been changed and physical activity can be an outlet.

Activities like ABC yoga can provide ‘brain breaks’ for kids – a way to move and have fun while silently addressing other important areas such as motor development and mental health. Movement helps wake the brain up and prepare for learning, so brain breaks in the middle of sedentary activity, like schoolwork packets or media time, can help kids learn better.

For younger kids, World Health Organization recommends 180 minutes of physical activity each day for overall physical and mental health and wellbeing. Activities like this can help kids work on multiple areas of development at once while staying active.

Meditation and Mindfulness:

During this unprecedented and unpredictable time, many children and families may find it hard to find peace of mind. Although we are all in this together, sometimes it’s easy to feel alone.

The ability to continue face-to-face sessions through telehealth service delivery allows clinicians to maintain strong therapeutic relationships with families. Our clinical staff members are very passionate and continue to find ways to connect with their clients through this new virtual reality. One way to help manage challenging feelings is through mindfulness and meditation guided activities.

When we focus on mindfulness, we center ourselves to be fully present and aware. While mindfulness is something we all naturally possess, it’s more readily available to us when we practice on a regular basis.

Pictured below, Kasey Hilinski, Family Based Mental Health Worker, continues to support and maintain calming thoughts with all of the families he helps each day by offering mindfulness and meditation activities.

Although telehealth may not be someone’s preferred method of therapy, Kasey is grateful to have the option to continue this important work for our community during this challenging time.

Continued Mission Delivery:

Undeniably, the COVID-19 crisis has had an impact on every part of your life – both personally and professionally.

Vulnerable. Uncertain. Overwhelmed. Stressed.

Perhaps you’ve felt those feelings first-hand as you try to navigate your daily life these past few weeks.

During the best of times, the Achievement Center of LECOM Health plays a critical role in the lives of thousands of children and families helping them in a myriad of ways. In times of stress, like now, individuals with mental health challenges can be especially vulnerable.

While we continue to navigate this uncharted territory, we are so grateful to have the dedication of so many compassionate staff members devoted to helping children and their families. The Achievement Center of LECOM Health remains operational and is continuing mission delivery via phone and video platforms. Our passionate and resilient staff members are bravely continuing to provide optimal, life-essential services as vulnerable clients and caregivers continue life in quarantine.

Hope. Relief. Peace. Progress.

Though this is a challenging and stressful time for many, the Achievement Center of LECOM Health is committed to helping children and families achieve success in their daily lives now, and in the future.

We’re all in this together.
