Pennsylvania businesses may now earn a tax credit while helping children in need in our community. The Achievement Center is approved for the Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program by the Pennsylvania Department of Community & Economic Development. This means that businesses can now receive a direct reduction of their state tax amount when they choose to make a contribution to our approved innovative educational programs: Beyond the Bell and Camp Read-A-Lot. With EITC donations, these programs are able to be offered at public schools at no cost to families.
Beyond the Bell is an after-school reading intervention program that serves students who are reading below grade level in order to provide support to help them become more proficient readers. The program provides literacy instruction to small groups of students and utilizes the balanced literacy framework. During the program, students participate in guided reading, phonics instruction, sight word practice and writing.
The pilot session of Beyond the Bell took place at Edison Elementary School with first grade students from October – March 2019.
Camp Read-A-Lot is a week long summer program, which offers an opportunity for students to foster creativity, learn new skills, develop new talents, increase confidence and motivation, and build reading skills in a relaxed environment.
During Camp Read A Lot, students spend time reading and writing in a fun camp setting. Students entering grades K-3 participate in shared reading, phonics and word study work, STEM activities, writing exercises and arts and crafts related to a different story each day. All students create a story or book of their own during the week as well. The purpose of the camp is to motivate young readers and encourage their educational growth over the summer months. Participants keep all of the books read throughout the week, as well as other educational materials.
Camp Read-A-Lot was held at Tracy Elementary School and Edison Elementary School in 2017 and 2018. In 2019, Camp Read-A-Lot will be held at Tracy Elementary, Edison Elementary, and Elk Valley Elementary School.
