For years, treatments for children with significant behavior challenges have focused solely on “fixing” the child. It sounds like a cliché, but the Achievement Center of LECOM Health’s new program, ACTive Parenting, is a game changer in every sense of the word. For years, treatments for children with significant behavior challenges have focused solely on “fixing” the child. Today, through a wealth of research and evidence-based practices, we understand that greater success is possible when the process also involves parents and works to develop their skills and acknowledges their fears, struggles and concerns. ACTive Parenting is based on two treatment modalities.
First, we support the behavioral needs of the child through Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA). ABA is a science-based approach to behavior change that is very effective in teaching new skills to the child as well as reducing problematic behavior.
Secondly, ACTive Parenting provides parents with the tools to successfully implement the ABA methods prescribed for their child. This is accomplished using Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT is a relatively new form of therapy that helps parents relate differently to the very common feelings of anxiety, worry, and confusion that they may experience during the course of their child’s treatment.
The Achievement Center of LECOM Health is excited about offering this new service. For families that are struggling to cope with a child’s behaviors, ACTive Parenting can be a positive, life changing treatment. If you’re interested in learning more, contact Bob Gulick, Director of Behavior Analytic Services at the Achievement Center of LECOM Health, 814-459-2755. ACTive Parenting sessions are typically two hours in length and are held twice a week for up to 16 weeks.
